From the HC…..

It was a mixed blessing to receive the Form 34s that members of the CAWG Chaplain Service submitted.  While it takes a bit of time to compile the reports so I can in turn submit my report to my Wing CC, the Region Chaplain and the National Chaplain Service Secretary, it is overwhelming to see the commitment of our Chaplains and MLOs.

Here is a brief summary of the accomplishments of our CAWG Chaplain Service during the calendar year 2001:

Attended 1,067 activities
Volunteered 9,806 hours
Traveled 48,875 miles
Invested $11,018.05

We also thank the Lord for the three Chaplains and eight MLOs which were appointed during the last year.  One more was just appointed in February of 2002.

Add to all that the number of Chaplains and MLOs who are pursuing their training in the specialty tracks 221 and 225; their senior member training track – completing levels 2,3,4, and 5; completing the on-line ICS and ES tests; completing the “Train-the-Trainer” course, and attending other training activities.

Your dedication to the squadrons you serve is admirable and contribute to making the CAWG the best in the nation.  It is a joy and a privilege to serve with you.

I look forward to seeing what the Lord has in store for the CAWG Chaplain Service during the year 2002 and to see what He will be doing in your lives as you continue to serve Him by serving others.

In Service Together,

Paul

 Report on the CSRSC

What a wonderful experience 17 members of the CAWG Chaplain Service shared at the recent CSRSC (Chaplain Service Region Staff College).  I have had the privilege of attending 4 CSRSC.  Each of them has been well planned and the content could not have been better.  The recent CSRSC conducted at Travis Air Force Base was no different.   All the elements of the past successful colleges were present – the curriculum and presenters; the Sunday evening fellowship time; the morning devotions; the building of relationships; the reports from the National – Regional – Wing Chaplain Services, the banquet.

However, this year’s CSRSC had a different look.  The Dean of this year’s CSRSC, Ch (Maj.) Whit Woodard had a separate training track for the Chaplains and MLOs on the first instructional day.  The MLOs were treated to an all-day session of training with Dr. Sam Marandos.  Capt. Bruce Joyner met certain requirements for his Senior and Master ratings in the MLO track by attending the conference and presenting a ML lesson at the college.   The Chaplains were briefed by active duty AF chaplains in the varied ministries that take place on an active military base and were also briefed on military funeral honors.

The CSRSC provided an opportunity to meet and hear from the Executive Administrator of CAP Chaplain Services (EXC), Ch (LtC.) Robert Hicks (ANG); Chief of CAP Chaplain Services (HC), Ch (Col) Jim Melancon, HC and Deputy Chief of CAP Chaplain Services (DHC), Ch (LtC.) Ken Van Loon – who also serves as the Dean for all CSRSC.  For each one, this was their first visit to a PCR Chaplain Service Staff College.

Chaplain (LtC.) Robert Hicks (ANG) provided the students with an outstanding briefing on Religious Terrorism.

For AE, students had the opportunity to be on the flight deck of a KC-10 and to serve as a member of the boom crew for refueling in a flight simulator.  I can verify that the future of the CAP Chaplain Service is in good hands because I was part of a flight crew with Ch (Col.) Jim Melancon who flew right seat and Ch (LtC.) Ken Van Loon who was navigating J

The college provided the opportunity for the appointment of MLO/promotion to 2nd Lt. Sue Willey, of Squadron 80.  Her epaulets were placed by Ch (Col.) Jim Melancon and Ch (LtC.) Dan Dyer.  It also was the opportunity to recognize the achievement of others.  Maj. Patricia “Pat” Okawa was also bestowed with the “Raising Cane” Award (you had to be there to understand the significance of this award).  Ch (Maj.) Jack Nahrstadt received the Paul E. Garber Award and Ch (Maj.) Paul Ward wpeC.jpg (41466 bytes)received the Gill Robb Wilson Award.  The Dep. Region Chaplain, Ch (LtC.) Whit Woodard wpe8.jpg (28164 bytes)(residing in CAWG) received the Gill Robb Wilson Award. A very special award was also presented to a very special person of the PCR/CAWG Chaplain Service.  The inaugural “Order of Flat Stanley” Award was bestowed upon Ch (LtC.) John Berger. wpeE.jpg (29898 bytes) Ch Berger attended the college and participated against the wishes of his physician since he was battling a very painful ailment (shingles).  In spite of that Chaplain John blessed the college with his song leading at the opening Sunday evening fellowship time and morning devotions, as well as an inspiring briefing on “The Ministry of Encouragement.”   The highlight of the banquet was the presentation of a California State Legislative Resolution, arranged by Ch (LtC.) Whit Woodard, that recognized the valuable contributions that our beloved Region Chaplain – Ch (LtC.) Dan Dyer wpeA.jpg (31006 bytes)– has given to our nation, state and Civil Air Patrol.  It was a moving moment and a fitting conclusion to the CSRSC.

Plan ahead to next February when the next CSRSC will be conducted at Nellis AFB.
