Chaplain (Maj) Paul Ward and
Col. Larry Myrick

FROM THE HC....
First of all, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the members of my staff for their input in planning the events in the weeks and days leading up to the Chaplain Service conference. While each member played a significant role, I would especially like to acknowledge the following for their valuable assistance: Ch (Capt.) Chuck Ingram registar; Ch (Maj.) Jack Nahrstadt and Maj. Pat Okawa leading workshops; Ch (LtC.) John Berger coordinating the retirement recognition events for Ch (Maj.) Pete North. We were honored to have Ch (Col.) James Melancon. National Chief of Chaplain Service and Ch (LtC.) Dan Dyer, PCR Chaplain, give briefings regarding the direction and vision of their respective services. Col. Larry Myrick, CAWG CC, was on hand to present Ch (Maj.) Pete North a certificate of retirement. (A full report of the conference is attached to the newsletter).

CHANGES AT NATIONAL HQ...

Ch, Col. James "Jim" Melancon, was selected by the newly elected National Commander, Br. Gen. Richard Bowling, to serve as the Chief of the CAP Chaplain Service at the National Conference held in August. Chaplain Melancon previously served as the Dep. Chief of CAP Chaplain Service, overseeing the Chaplain Service Region Staff Colleges. His service includes being the Alabama Wing Chaplain, the Deputy and Staff Chaplain for the Southeast Region. It was our privilege to have Chaplain Melancon to participate in our recent CAWG Chaplain Service conference, his first conference since being selected.

Ch, LtCol. Robert M. Hicks of the Florida Air National Guard has been selected as the corporation's first Executive Administrator of the Chaplain Service. He has over thirty years of ministry experience and 22 years of Air Guard Chaplain service, including tours in Central and South America, Europe and the Mediterranean. He also served with the USAF Chaplain Service Institute and taught at the Air War College. A pioneer in the field of critical incident stress management and training, he has nine books in print and a tenth in the works. He began his responsibilities at HQ CAP on 1 September.

EMERGENCY SERVICES

This past year there was a major change in the area of Emergency Services. The previous regulations and manuals have been replaced with ones that reflect the new Incident Command System - adopted so that CAP will be on the same page as other agencies involved in emergency services. To keep your ES card current, you must take the CAPT 116 and ICS 100 Introduction tests. This must be done prior to December 31, 2001. These can be accessed on the CAP National home page (www.capnhq.gov). Be sure you ask for the Certificate to be printed. If you need assistance in the process, contact Chaplain Nahrstadt or Chaplain Ward.
