THREE MAJOR TYPES OF MAGLEV
BY ROY D. VINSON
There are three major types of maglevs which differ principally by the manner in
which they achieve their levitation (lifting). Those types are:
1. Electromagnetic (EMS)
2. Electrodynamic or Super-Conducting (SC)
3. Permanent Magnets (PMS)
All three types of maglevs incorporate features which at all
times and under all conditions, must accomplish the following:
-
Maintain a sufficient air gap between cars and the rails to
permit efficient operation of the system.
-
Maintain the proper vertical and horizontal alignment of the
cars with the rails
-
Incorporate features which will provide:
* Maximum safety for the passenger
cars
* Maximum economy of construction,
operation and maintenance of rolling
stock and trackage
