TRANSPORTATION EQUITY ACT FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

(TEA 21)

This recently approved bill will fund transportation projects for the next six years.

MAJOR POINTS OF THE BILL THAT EFFECT MAG LEV DEVELOPMENT:

g $530 Million from trust funds has been established for innovative financing of large infrastructure projects.

g The number of high-speed rail corridors has been increased from 5 to 10. These corridors will receive $121 million over 6 years including $31.5 million in trust funds.

g $55 to $60 million has been set aside to conduct mag lev feasibility studies and development that will lead to the construction of the first segment of a mag lev corridor.

g $1 Billion has been authorized for mag lev development.

g The federal railroad administration will solicit proposals in a few weeks and tentatively plan to select about five projects in January for further study.

g This bill makes grade crossing hazard elimination eligible for surface transportation program funds.
